A Heavy Workload |
At the end of my freshmen year of college, I was chosen to hold the position of House Manager in my sorority. The job entailed organizing the living situation for all nineteen girls, managing the checking account, mailing in the rent checks each month, supplying groceries twice weekly for the entire house, and mediating conflicts between roommates. This position allowed for me to exercise my inner strengths and skills, but also caused me a lot of stress. Even before I was appointed the position, it was well known that I had a habit of trying to do too much on my own. I always seemed to be running from one thing to another, hardly ever taking time to relax. However, the position required an immense amount of time, and since I was already balancing sixteen units and a part time job, it was impossible to handle alone. In essence, House Manager was a yearlong project that would take self-discipline and another’s help to tackle. Thus, I chose to appoint another girl in the house to be my assistant. At first, it was hard to let go of some of my responsibilities and to trust another person to follow through in the job. But with time, I learned to have faith in others and to believe that I was not the only person who wanted things to get done, and to get done right. Over the course of the last year, the position of House Manager has provided me with many obstacles, each one challenging, yet conquerable. With each completed task, I have improved my organizational skills, sharpened my ability to multi-task, learned to efficiently manage my time, and most importantly, sacrificed my own pride to accept that I cannot do everything, even when I may want to. Though my position is almost over, I cannot be more thankful for the opportunities that it provided me. Looking back on the past year, I cannot imagine a better thing could have happened to me. In the near future, I will need to utilize all these skills to work in a team environment, and use my new knowledge to continually move ahead and grow as an individual. I know that because of my position in the house I will be prepared for any future obstacles that may block my path, and with the help of those around me, we can succeed together.

My Greatest Accomplishment |
This past summer while working as a camp counselor and head lifeguard at a day camp in Saratoga, I became attached to a young redhead named Madison. Everyday, I watched as she sat scared and timid on the side of the pool jealous of all the fun her friends seemed to be having splashing and swimming in the clear blue water. After a near drowning experience, the pool seemed like a monster ready to eat her toes if they touched the water. However, by the end of the summer she could swim from one end of the pool to the other without stopping. With my help, Madison faced her fears and in doing so taught me just as much as I taught her. Getting Madison in the water was tough at first, but with my persistence and encouragement she finally gave in and let me carry her into the shallow end. Everyday for two hours we practiced breathing techniques, perfected her stroke, and boosted her confidence. The effect amazed me. The smile that shone on her face the first time she swam three feet from the wall out to me was enough to make the whole summer worthwhile. And at the end of the summer, when her mother came to watch her swim, it brought tears to my eyes to know that she had succeeded in something she had never thought possible, and that I helped to get her there. Working with Madison allowed for me to demonstrate my leadership abilities through my guidance, and also to show the people skills that I so proudly posses. As her teacher, I was able to attest to my ability to vocalize my thoughts and actions clearly enough that a seven year old could understand and learn. I also demonstrated an immense amount of patience during frustrating times and never had any doubts about Madison’s abilities. These qualities provide evidence that I am able to handle responsibility and work with people in any environment to reach a common goal. Just as I taught Madison, she taught me just as much. I learned to work hard for what I want and to always strive for excellence. In any job, these strengths will help me interact with others and provide outstanding results. Without a doubt, these skills would be a great asset to any work environment.
